Photographic sessions are held in the relaxed environment of my home studio and I service Grand Rapids and the surrounding areas.  My *style* is very relaxed and easy going as I believe that children photograph best when they are free to explore and play.  My ultimate goal is for your family to have fun and you’ll probably find me kicking off my shoes and getting down on the floor with the kids.  I only schedule one session per day and they generally last for 1-2 hours so that I can take my time with your session, snapping away freely, stopping for breaks and snacks when we need to, making sure everyone stays happy.

Before the Session

I am typically booked several weeks in advance, so it is important to call early to reserve a date.   I do however allow room in my schedule to accommodate newborns, as the best time to photograph them is under 2 weeks of age.
Once we have agreed on a session date I shall send you out some more detailed information for you to look over and forms to be completed and returned with your session fee within 7 days to secure your booking.

During the Session

My ultimate goal is to create a fun, relaxed, non pressured environment for you and your family.  I will spend time getting to know your children and will play with them throughout the session, encouraging them to be themselves.  It is important that everyone feel relaxed and comfortable.  It is completely okay for kids to act silly or shy, the best sessions happen when parents relax and allow the children to be themselves.

Clothing - You have alot of options when it comes to clothing.  If you prefer a classic look, choose something simple, without busy patterns or logos.  Let’s not distract from the essence of the portraits, your family.  Jeans work really well as you can dress them up or down.  Bare feet always look perfect and babies look best in their own skin, or just wrapped in a blanket.  But please…….don’t be afraid to have fun.  For a more modern look bring a few fresh and funky items too……show personality!   Tights, hats, jackets, gumboots, singlets, beanies, scarves all make for wonderful accessories.  If in doubt, bring several outfits and I will help you choose what will work best.

I love to incorporate personalities, so feel free to bring items that are special to you and your child.  If your child has a passion (instrument, ball, teddy, etc), let’s use it.

Weather - sessions may need to be rescheduled due to insufficient natural light.  This will only happen in the event of rain or dark stormy weather.

FAQs

When is the best time to book a newborn session?

The simple answer is “the earlier the better”.  You should book as soon as possible, preferably while you are pregnant to ensure that we can fit you in.  We will make a tentative booking based around your due date for 1-2 weeks after.  Then I will ask that you put me on your list of people to call on the day baby is born and we will confirm an actual date then.  And remember, newborns are best photographed between 6-12 days of age.

How long does a session typically last?

Generally sessions last between 1-2 hours, although newborn sessions have been known to go a little longer.  This allows plenty of time for the children to relax and play and have fun and for us to capture some beautiful images.

What is the best time of day to schedule a session?

I always schedule sessions between 9:30-10:00am or 6:30-7:00pm.  These times of the day provides the most flattering light for portraits.  The sun is far too harsh from midday to afternoon and produces hard shadows.

What if my child is sick on the day of the session?

In the event of illness, I would recommend that you call and reschedule the session.  Trying to have children “soldier on” will only result in disappointment, as your finished images will likely not be the “child you know”.  The camera doesn’t lie.  I would much prefer to reschedule a session if it means getting you images that you can truly be proud of.

Do you photograph extended families?

I prefer to photograph immediate families only.  Larger family groups require organising and posing which strays from my style.  I can however give you a referral to another photographer who might better suit your needs.

Can I purchase all of the images from the session?

Yes you can, a Session Keepsake album is available for purchase after a minimum $300 order is placed.  The gorgeous album is a very popular choice with most clients as it allows them to keep all of the images from the session at a fantastic saving, it also appeals to those who have limited wall space.  This then allows them to focus on their favourites for the wall without feeling like they have to let any images go.  Contact me regarding the price of the Session Keepsake Album.

When is the best time to schedule a Maternity Session?

Maternity sessions are best held when you are 35 to 37 weeks pregnant.  I would recommend booking earlier in your pregnancy as my schedule fills up quite quickly and it would be a shame to miss out.

What do most clients invest in their photography session and how much should my budget be?

Custom photography is a luxury.  Unlike department stores or chain studios, custom photography affords you the complete luxury of customising your session to your family’s needs.  Working with a custom photographer means that you are working with someone who is invested in taking the time to ensure you get the very best from your portrait experience.
Most clients who opt for custom portraiture are clients who appreciate and value high-end custom work , and who have a strong desire to celebrate their families in the form of “art” on their walls, in albums, as gifts to family and friends, as unique and timeless design elements for home decor.
I am happy to discuss your vision and budget and how you can best use the images from your session to fulfill you needs.
